What drew you to becoming a coach?

  • "My personal experience as an athlete in school athletics taught me so many valuable life skills and lessons about succeeding in life that I knew, when I decided to pursue an Education Degree in college, that when I became a professional educator...coaching had to be a part of that profession.  Coaching is really just teaching and education to me and I have to say that as much as I try to teach within the coaching aspect of my profession, the athletes and the process continually challenges and educates me as well.  Coaching still fuels me and that is why I continue to do it."
What coaching philosophy or approach do you bring to your athletes?
  • "My coaching philosophy can best be summed up by the tagline in my email signature..."Success is the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you have done your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming (John Wooden).  This philosophy reflects that belief that I hold that the process...the journey is the end goal and is far more important than the "prize" that may or may not be awarded in the end.  Journeying to the best of our ability and according to our abilities and potential is the ultimate end with every team.  End goals for specific categories of any sport I coach might remain consistent, but the strategies and tactics used to reach those goals are tailored year to year to bring out the best in our particular roster of athletes."

Can you share a memorable coaching moment or success story?
  • "In a career as long as mine (entering year 36 of this education profession) there are a variety of highlights.  In one way, nothing compares to the winning of a state championship and I have been blessed to lead some teams that have accomplished that level of play and winning success.  Yet, I have to say one of the top highlights in my career involved the very first Girls Varsity Team that I coached.  The Captains and "Upperclasswomen" of that group did not have a lot of personal success history in the game of basketball and not much was expected of that particular group within the school community.  The season included some violations, suspensions, and need for relationship and trust rebuilding.  The team won just 6 games that year (prize) but grew so much as individuals and as a team and competed incredibly well and hard even in games that did not end with a "win."  Although the win total equaled just 6, the season was seen as a tremendous success which began a positive transformation and direction for the program (process).  Members of that team and I remain relatively close to this day and the memories of that season will always be among the best that I have.  Although I had coached boys basketball for 25 years prior to that season, I was pretty hooked on Girls' Basketball from that point on."
