Koreski Wins Late to Seal Victory over Mt. Baker

Tuesday, January 21st, 2025, was a premiere match-up of the two undefeated 1A Classifications rivals. Battling for the 1A Classification spot in the Northwest Conference Crossover the Blaine Borderites and Mount Baker Mountaineers were primed for the challenge.

The match started at 106 pounds and Trent Crabtree received a forfeit, giving the Borderites a 6-0 lead. At 113, Chris Zamudio won by points, making the team score 9-0 Borderites. Cole Voigt, at 120 picked up a big pin to push the borderite lead to 21-0. Mount Baker bounced back at 132 and 138 to make the team score 21-12. At 144, Dan Johner, dominated with an armbar-half to get the pin and stretch the lead to 27-12 for the Borderites. Within the heart of the Mountaineer's line-up, they picked up big pins at 150, 157 and 165 to take the lead at 30-27 Mountaineers. Rhys Milligan put the Borderites back on top with an overwhelming pin at 174. Borderites 33-30! Mount Baker found a pin at 190, with their senior captain making the score 36-33 for the Mountaineers. At 215, Baker mixed up their line-up to try to push their lead out of reach but Blake Koreski would not have it! He was in command for the first whistle, getting a first round pin and propelling the Borderites to the lead, 39-36. Otto Shelton then picked up a forfeit at 285 to seal the Senior Night win, 45-36.

Great Job Borderites. They compete in the NWC Championships on Wednesday at Anacortes HS.
